south coast

may 4th
we started our 10-day drive around the country leaving reykjavik and driving along the south coast.  the ring road was surrounded by lava fields, covered in moss - the picture on the right is what it looks like close up.

further along, once you get past the lava, the ground is covered is this crazy, lumpy hay.  the highest part of the lumps probably come up to one's ankle.  it's weird.

then we caught a glimpse of the volcano that's been causing everyone hell.  there aren't many pictures after this as it was totally smokey and we couldn't see much.

then we moved on to the sights:

Skógarfoss - according to sagas, there's supposed to be hidden treasure behind the waterfall and once a boy found it and grabbed a ring on its side when it suddenly disappeared again.  the ring is on display at some museum - we didn't visit the museum.  but if anyone is crazy enough to venture behind a waterfall that's 60m high and 25 across - i think they deserve a lil gold.
then there were the black sand beaches nearby the village Vík í Mýrdal.  this was exciting since a picture of these beaches was my desktop background on my Cisco laptop to get me through the last days of work.
Reynisdrangar - these are trolls that were pulling a ship to land who got caught by the sun.  stupid trolls.
