we started off the day driving through some old turf farms. they make you feel like you're in the Shire. the turf walls and sod roofs were protected the people from harsh climates.
then we visited Dverghamrar where the elves live - or dwarfs or something. not gonna lie - with the harsh winds and silence of the morning - i kinda freaked myself out here
driving further along the ring road - we caught our first glimpse of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Iceland - comprising about 10% of the country's area.
then we went and hiked one of the "tongues" Skaftafellsjökull - such a cool experience. the glacier is incredibly peaceful. the calmness is only interrupted by sounds of the small rivers below that sound like small fountains (minus the motors) and visually by the jagged yet beautiful crevasses and layers of ash embedded in the ice making the glacier surface look almost like stone. this was definitely a highlight of the trip and i only wish we went for a longer hike. oh carrying around an icepick was pretty sweet too.
then we visited the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón which is actually half fresh glacier water and half salt water (from the ocean) - it's growing everyday as the water in the lagoon melts away the glacier.
